- For this question we asked people what genre they listened to the most to give us an example of how many people listen to the genre we are doing. This helps to identify our target audience and how many people we are targeting.
2) When you listen to this genre what conventions do you notice in the music videos?
We asked people this because they are people who watch videos from this genre regularly so they are able to say what they usually see in videos like ours and what they will expect. People who answered this question said that things they would usually expect are -
Dark setting and location throughout the majority of the video.
Clothes and props relatable to the genre.
These answers are useful to us when creating our video as we know what our audience is expecting from the video.
3) What is your age range? (circle one)
10-15 15-20 20-25 25-30 Older
As these results show the main age range that listen to the music that I surveyed were 15-25. This gives us the audience we need to aim our music video to.
4) How frequently do you watch music videos from this genre?
We asked this question to get a gauge of how often people would watch a video from this genre compared with other genres.
5) What makes you want to watch a music video?
This question was asked so that we would be able to tell the main reason people watch a video, for example for the song or artist.
The results of this question made it seem like most people would watch a video because they were recommended by a friend or by YouTube. This would mean for us that the majority of people would probably see our video if their friend recommended it.
6) Do you prefer narrative based music videos, performance based or concept based video?
In reply to this question the majority said they preferred a narrative based video as it meant more to them. This would mean it might be better for us to include our video as a narrative but we could mix it with performance based also.
7) Do you prefer one person in the video as a solo or a group ?
We wanted to ask this question because it would make a big difference what our audience would prefer weather it was a solo or group we would need to shoot.
8) What editing styles would you expect to find in a video from the indie genre?
We needed to ask this question to see what the audience thinks usually is seen in a indie video, it could be fast paced and a lot of different cuts or the opposite.
The results suggested most people thought the indie music videos are relatively slow paced with longer shots.
9) How long do you think a music video should be and how long you would watch it before getting bored?
For this question it would help us to choose a song from the genre if we know what length they would ideally be. Everyone said somewhere between 3-4 minutes would be a good length .
10) Where would an indie music video be set ideally?
Everyone for this question said in places specific to the genre, they said it wouldn't be set in places like a rap video, instead it would be set in public parks.
We will use some of this research in our music video because it gives us an idea of what our target audience would want to see as our music video.
