Comparison Of Music Video Findings

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a song. Modern music videos are used as a marketing strategy and to promote a song. The earliest ever music videos were filmed around the 1950's.

Goodwin's theory consists of 8 main principles:

Links between lyrics and visuals
Links between music and visuals
Genre characteristics
Intertextual reference
Notions of looking
Voyeurism (people looking at artist)
Demands of record label
Performance, narrative, concept based videos

Goodwin said that in order for a music video to be successful these eight principles need to be considered.

The following video shows a very good representation and comparison as we see equilibrium and up sets. This links with todorov theory however throughout there is also references to the eight principles.

Eminem - Not Afraid

The song below shows parts of good wins theory and todorov's theory. It shows how the lyrics link with the visuals mainly as we see two friends breaking apart. We see todorov's theory as there is an equilibrium. It begins this way as everything is balanced before changing as the friends break apart.

Wiz Khalifa - See You Again ft. Charlie Puth [Official Video] Furious 7 Soundtrack

These two songs compare as they both follow the theorist in some way, this means they follow the same method. This will help us as it gives us an example of how to follow the structure and priciples correctly.
